ABOUT THE INSTITUTE

Chesapeake Beach Professional Seminars was created in Chesapeake Beach, Maryland in 1995 to provide training for mental health providers. In 1997 the play therapy institute was added through the inspiration of Margaret Drury, LCSW-C.  We offer over 150 hours of play therapy training and have added Sandtray and Art Interventions Tracks. CBPS is an approved provider for continuing education for social workers, psychologists, counselor and play therapists.

MISSION STATEMENT
We strive to help bring relief to the suffering of children and adolescents by providing state-of-the-art training in the area of play therapy and child psychotherapy.

WHAT IS PLAY THERAPY
Play is described as the child's world of "make-believe", a safe place to work through inner conflicts, where toys are used as tools.  For the therapist, it is one of the best places to learn about the child's inner thoughts, personality, worries and wishes (Irwin). Giants in the field such as Virginia Axline, Clark Moustakas, Carl Rogers and Haim Ginon have contributed much to the early development of play therapy. Play therapy is a specialized field in which the trained therapist creates an environment where the child uses play to heal.

WHY BECOME A REGISTERED PLAY THERAPIST
This specialized training is not offered in most mental health related graduate programs.  As a result, there are few fully trained child therapists/play therapists.  Obtaining play therapy credentials is not mandatory but does demonstrate to consumers, parents/caregivers and health insurance companies added expertise and increased credibility.  Every agency that provides therapy to children and families should have at least one Registered Play Therapist that is fully trained and credentialed.

The Association for Play Therapy located in Fresno, California offers Registered Play Therapy credentials to licensed mental health clinicians.  In order to obtain credentials, 150 hours of play therapy training, in addition to clinical supervision is required. Content of training includes history, theory, techniques/methods, and the application of play therapy to special populations and in special settings.  In addition, there are specific requirements that must be met before obtaining credentials.  Please contact the Association for Play Therapy for more specific written information.  CBPS provide over 150 hours of training. Our provider number is APT#97-034.  To contact the association, please call Tel.# 559-252-2278 or send an e-mail to: info@a4pt.org.  Website: www.a4pt.org.  Please note that CBPS does not provide credentials or licensure of any kind.

CLINICAL SUPERVISION

Clinical supervision with a Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor is available for groups and/or individuals.  The cost is in addition to the workshops.  Please call the Association to determine how many hours of supervision you need.  Some of our instructors provide clinical supervision.  Please call us for more specific information.

CONTINUING EDUCATION UNITS/CREDITS

CBPS is approved by the Maryland Board of Social Work Examiners to sponsor Category I continuing education programs Recognized by the National Board of Certified Counselors to offer continuing education for National Certified Counselors. NBCC Provider # 5763.  Approved by the Maryland Board of Psychology to sponsor Category A continuing education programs.  Approved by the Association for Play Therapy to offer continuing education programs specific in play therapy.  Provider #97-034.  Approved by the Board of Behavioral Sciences in California to offer CEUs for MFCC and LCSW. Approval # PCE 1466.  CBPS maintains responsibility for the training.

Each full day of training offers six CEUs (9am - 4:30pm).  Certificates are awarded at the end of the training or mailed to participants.  These certificates will contain the number of CEUs awarded.

Also, participants are required to summarize their play therapy session in a standardized format titled, “Play Therapy Session Summary” and make a brief oral presentation to the group on the client’s background, purpose of the session, play therapy technique(s) utilized, theoretical foundation, and outcome(s) of session.
