Summer Institute: Techniques include play, cognitive behavior, art interventions, and sandtray therapy. A combination of theory and practice with a strong emphasis on skill building will be provided. This series is offered as a five day training. We recommend that you attend the entire series. However, you are welcome to choose any of the trainings.

HISTORY, THEORY AND FOUNDATION OF PLAY THERAPY
This workshop is designed to provide the basic understanding of play therapy as an appropriate mental health intervention with children. The workshop includes major approaches, stages in play therapy and the therapists role. Special issues will be addressed, some of which are precursors to other workshop offerings. An historical perspective to the origins, contributions of the giants in the field and the early use of play therapy will be included. If you are serious about play therapy, this workshop is a MUST!

FUNDAMENTALS OF PLAY THERAPY
Beginners will gain an understanding of play therapy and learn how it differs from regular play. History and theory of play therapy will be presented as well as how to implement the play therapy process from beginning to end. Participants will learn how to set up the therapy room, identify themes, therapeutic responses and specific interventions during the various stages of play therapy.

KALEIDOSCOPE OF ART/THERAPY TECHNIQUES
An array of play therapy techniques to engage and reach children will be taught and demonstrated. Rationale behind the various techniques will be explained. Participants will be able to observe demonstrations as well as practice the techniques. Strategies to help children build self-esteem, identifying and tolerate a wide range of feelings, death and dying issues, deal with bullies and mange anger. This workshop is highly experiential and interactive. Techniques demonstrated are useful in individual and group settings.

PLAY THERAPY WITH THE ANGRY CHILD
This workshop will focus on the psychodynamics around anger, some reasons why it occurs and how it is manifested in the child. Specific strategies for working with the child in the playroom as well as to coach parents in managing the childs behavior will also be explored.

INTRODUCTION TO SANDTRAY
Participants will learn about the history and therapeutic value of sandtray therapy, then build and hold five-item sandtray. Participants will learn and practice non-directive approach to conducting a sandtray session. Practical concerns about documentation and how to set up a sandtray space will be covered.
